Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force

Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force is as close as we've come so far to actually being able to participate in an away team mission. The plot of this first-person shooter is pure Star Trek: during a battle with an alien ship, the badly damaged USS Voyager is transported by mysterious means to a strange spaceship graveyard. It isn't long before the Voyager crew members discover they aren't the only abductees trying to patch their vessel together and escape, and the adventure begins. As a member of Voyager's newly formed hazard team, it's your job to secure required repair materials, gather information about the other survivors, and ultimately enable Voyager to resume its long journey home. Frequently there are two or more team members with you (including familiar faces like Seven of Nine), which lets missions play out more like episodes from the series than a solo firefight that just happens to take place in a Star Trek setting. Other team members will disable security fields, analyze data, converse with you as the mission progresses, and add some much-needed firepower in the tough battle sequences. Elite Force uses the Quake III engine to good effect, serving up some beautiful environments, colorful special effects, and smooth frame rates. Our only gripe is that all the missions take place inside various spacecraft, but the architecture used by each race is unique so that it isn't too repetitive. Elite Force stays very true to the source material, as we discovered the first time we beamed into a Borg cube and watched the inhabitants march by as if we weren't there. We shot a passing Borg to see what would happen, and the massive environment sprung to life as the threat was detected and dozens of angry Borg converged on our position. The cast of the TV series provided the voices for their characters in the game, and the artists painstakingly modeled the interior of Voyager. It all lends an authentic flair to this fun game that belongs in the collection of any Star Trek fan. --T. Byrl Baker Pros: Almost like participating in an episode of the show Better than average voice acting Authentic environments, visuals, and sounds add to the experience Cons: Somewhat boring weapons Plot-driven story line forces linear mission design

SNK NEOGEO Pocket Color Console in Platinum Silver

Look out, Game Boy Color. When it comes to serious portable gameplay, there's finally some legitimate competition for the popular Nintendo system (which has sold over 80 million units). If you dare to be different, consider the NEOGEO Pocket Color, a hand-held system created by the Japanese company SNK. The screen is 10 percent bigger than Game Boy's, but the overall machine has roughly the same convenient pocket-sized dimensions and light weight as the Game Boy. The NEOGEO Pocket Color provides up to 40 hours of continuous fun on just two AA batteries. The 16-bit graphics are crystal clear--making it easy to tell the difference between humans and animals, friends and foes, and walls and doors--and easily viewed in both bright and dim lighting. The color palette has three times the range of its competitor's, with 146 possible shades. There is also a built-in calendar, daily horoscope, alarm clock, and global clock that can be accessed even without a game cartridge in the slot. Two players can go head-to-head with a simple cable connection (sold separately). NEOGEO is available in six different casing colors: silver, clear, blue, ocean blue, stone blue, and anthracite. The only drawback is that NEOGEO is new and, therefore, playing catch-up to Nintendo's well-stocked list of titles, which boasts A-list offerings such as Super Mario Brothers, Pokémon Pinball, and Tetris. But SNK scores points for the few titles that it does offer for the system. Among the better titles for NEOGEO are Dragons Wild video poker, arcade classics Bust-A-Move and Pac-Man, and your basic serve-and-volley Pocket Tennis. Most of these games are pretty addictive and perfectly suited to the well-designed, thumb-friendly, eight-position joystick. --Carrie Bell Pros: Better graphics than other portable players Very good visibility in bright sun and dim light Variety of fun colors Cons: No Pokémon titles yet Response of the joystick isn't the best on games (such as Crush Roller) that require sharp, quick turns

Monster Rancher 2

Monster Rancher 2 is the sequel to one of the strangest and most innovative games ever produced. It is a virtual pet simulator in many ways, but transcends that description by virtue of its varied gameplay elements and combat-oriented theme. The game begins with the creation of a monster, which is accomplished by inserting any CD (even an audio CD) into the PlayStation. A unique monster is generated from the data that is imbedded on each CD. Once you have your unique CD-generated beast, it's time to go to the ranch for training. With each training session, you will raise your monster stamina and strength statistics, which gives each particular monster a better chance for success in the game's exciting combat mode. Sending an undisciplined monster into the arena is a recipe for failure, so much of our playing time involved training our creations and watching them develop into lethal, confident juggernauts. No two monsters are the same, and each develops its own unique personality as the game progresses. We became more attached to this game's creations than other games in the genre because of this well-executed feature. --T. Byrl Baker Pros: Unlimited replay potential Better graphics than before Cons: Training requires much patience
